PREEMPTIVE JUMP OVERCALLS
See chapter STRONG JUMP OVERCALLS in the book "Defensive Bidding"
for the arguments favoring strong jumps over preemptive jumps in
normal situations.
Preemptive Single Jump Overcalls
Single jump overcalls are normally strong, but not:
-- Directly over strong artificial openings and responses to them:
North East
1C 2D/2H/2S/3C - preemptive
South West North East
1C Pass 1D/1H 2S/3C/3D - preemptive
-- Directly over a 1C or 1D opening by five-card majorites, but not
over responses to such an opening. See chapter MARVIN VS FIVE-CARD
MAJORS in the book "Marvin's Conventions and Treatments."
North East
1D 2H/2S/3C/3D - preemptive
South West North East
1C Pass 1H 2S - strong jump overcall
But: South West North East
1D Pass Pass 2H/2S/3C - invitational
This is a standard intermediate strength jump overcall. See chapter
REOPENING THE BIDDING in the book "Defensive Bidding."
-- Over a notrump opening, even in the reopening seat:
South West
1NT 3 any - preemptive
South West North East
1NT Pass Pass 3 any - preemptive
Of course the reopening jump is not going to be very weak. It just
warns partner that notrump or a major suit contract is probably
out. With a promising hand, fourth seat can show the single suit
by an artificial overcall. See chapters MARVIN VS STRONG NOTRUMP
and MARVIN VS WEAK NOTRUMP in the book "Marvin's Conventions and
Treatments."
If opener's partner has responded with a weak natural bid, jump
overcalls by an unpassed hand are strong:
South West North
1NT 2H * 3S - strong, invitational
* sign-off
-- Jump overcalls in a minor (only), against an opposing transfer
response to a 1NT opening:
South West North East
1NT Pass 2D 3S - strong
4C/4D - preemptive
-- Jump overcalls by a passed hand, but against a suit opening a
reopening jump overcall shows a good hand:
South West North East
Pass 1C Pass Pass
2D - S-32 H-65 D-KQ10873 C-A65
-- Jump overcalls in an opposing suit that has been bid naturally,
when partner has not bid:
South West North East
1C Pass 1H 3H - preemptive
-- Jump overcalls of a 1NT response, when partner has overcalled:
South West North East
1C 1H 1NT 3D/3S - preemptive
Requirements
At the two level, requirements for a weak jump overcall are the
same as for a weak two bid (see WEAK TWO BIDS).
At the three level or higher, requirements are the same as for an
opening preemptive bid at that level.
A jump overcall in a minor suit will often tempt an unpassed
partner into a 3NT bid, so jumps to 3C or 3D should be sound if
partner has not passed.
The Ogust convention (see WEAK TWO BIDS) applies to weak jump
overcalls at the two level. New suit advances of the overcall are
forcing for one round, unless advancer has previously passed.
Overcaller bids notrump to show support for advancer's suit (must
be alerted).
Double/Triple Jump Overcalls
North East
1C 3D/4D/4C
If less than game, these overcalls deny any defensive strength
outside the suit bid (and preferably no ace in the bid suit).
Game bids may be stronger, having the same considerations as
opening game bids. See HIGH LEVEL PREEMPTIVE OPENINGS.
